Description

Here is an RCA Radiola Superhetrodyne Portable AR-812.  This radio, paired with an RCA UZ1320 horn speaker would have been all the rage as a Christmas gift in 1924 and made you a hit at the beach as it 'blasted' ragtime jazz music for very well covered 'flappers' and their guys!  This was one of the first radios utilizing Major Armstrong's 'superhet' design.  It is still the basic template design for pretty much all receivers today.  Even your HDTV set is a 'superhet'!

Portable is a stretch for this 11.5"H x 35"W x 11.5"D radio and don't forget that the speaker was extra baggage.  The 'A' and 'B' batteries fit into the compartments on each isde of the main radio.  The 'C' battery fits in a compartment to the rear right of the radio chassis are.  A wiring harness hooks everything together.  The radio alone, less batteries and speaker, weighs in at 37 pounds.  Still, this was the new technology of the day and it was quite a step forward at that.  Unlike modern superhetrodyne receivers, this radio uses separate dials for the main RF and mixer tuning.  Not too long after it was realized that these functions tracked each other well giving rise to one dial tuning with both functions 'ganged' together on one control.  Just as now with the latest gadget, you might have been wise to wait for next years model but, then again, no beach parties for you in 1925!

This radio is in generally good shape.  It does come with a full compliment of 6 untested UV-199 tubes (I believe that the are all UV-199s anyway).  The main cabinet is in very good shape with a solid but crazed finish.  The wood is in good shape.  The front panel is in good shape with some edge chipping.  Some of the front panel wood lamination was loose so I glued it, I think competently, so as to avoid further damage.  The main front dials have some minor corrosio
