This is a National Panasonic R-8 jewel box 6 transistor radio.  These radios are are cute!  They were designed to look a lot like a fifties Hi-Fi console radio/record player.  They have top compartment to put small jewelry or other items in.  They were sort of a novelty radio with an actual use.  Many were probably to be found on dressers and night stands while many probably, even in the early sixties when they were made went straight to the decorative items shelf.

This radio does work well and has no real flaws other than the most minor oif corrosion on one battery connection spring.
